Eucalyptus (Silver Dollar) (Eucalyptus cinerea)

Silver dollar eucalyptus is an aromatic foliage with round, silvery-blue leaves, one of the most popular greens used in modern bouquets and wedding arrangements.

Eucalyptus (Silver Dollar)

Overview

Eucalyptus is a genus of more than 700 species of trees and shrubs in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), almost all native to Australia. In floristry, eucalyptus is one of the most popular foliage (greenery) choices. The silver dollar eucalyptus (Eucalyptus cinerea) is famous for its round, coin-shaped, silvery-blue leaves.

Appearance & Fragrance

The juvenile leaves are round, powdery blue-grey and arranged in pairs along the stem. The leaves contain aromatic oils (mainly eucalyptol / 1,8-cineole) that release a fresh, minty, camphor-like scent when touched – adding fragrance to any bouquet.

Popular Florist Varieties

  • Silver Dollar (E. cinerea) – large round leaves, classic look.
  • Baby Blue (E. pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue’) – small, stacked, stemless round leaves.
  • Seeded eucalyptus (E. parvifolia and others) – clusters of green seed pods add texture.
  • Gunnii (E. gunnii) – small, delicate round leaves.
  • Willow / Nicholii – long, narrow, drooping leaves for cascading designs.

Symbolism

Eucalyptus symbolises protection, healing, abundance and new beginnings. Its fresh, calming scent makes it popular in get-well and spa-style gifts.

Use in Bouquets

Eucalyptus provides structure, soft colour contrast and a natural, garden-style look. It pairs well with white roses, peonies, ranunculus, hydrangeas and lisianthus, and is a staple in rustic and boho weddings, garlands and table runners.

Care & Vase Life

  • Strip leaves below the water line and recut woody stems at an angle.
  • Fresh vase life: 2–3 weeks.
  • Eucalyptus dries beautifully – simply leave it out of water or hang upside down; it keeps its scent and shape for months.
  • Hanging a bunch in a steamy shower releases its aroma.

Safety Note

Eucalyptus oil is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed – keep bouquets out of reach of pets.
